Scholarship Bits & Pieces

 

 

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) forms are now available in the guidance office.  To access the forms online go to www.fafsa.ed.gov  If you are planning on submitting the FAFSA online; go to www.pin.ed.gov to get a PIN now.  This enables you to electronically sign your FAFSA.  Your parents must also apply for a PIN if you are a dependent.  You may also access the form online at www.ed.gov/studentaid

                                                         

Seniors….if you have taken classes through NRCC, SWVGS, or anywhere else, and are planning on furthering your education, remember to request transcripts from those institutions to have sent to the school you will be attending in the fall.

 

Granville P. Meade Scholarships

  • Applicants must be planning to attend a Virginia college/university
  • Must be unable to attend college without financial assistance
  • Based on academic achievement, character, & financial need
  • Applications & 4 letters of reference due January

 

The Congress-Bundestag Vocational Exchange Program

  • GHS can nominate three seniors who have a 3.0 GPA or better
  • Program is designed to increase participant’s awareness of Germany’s culture, politics, and history
  • Available to students who have taken vocational training and who want to spend the next year pursuing their vocational interests
  • Application deadline:  January

 

Virginia Tech Pamplin Leader Award ($1,000)

  • One qualified individual from each high school in Virginia is eligible who chooses to attend VT
  • Potential candidates demonstrate leadership and outstanding academic performance (at least 3.75 GPA and/or rank in top 10% of class)
  • Requires application, two-page essay, and letter of recommendation. 
  • Deadline is January

 

John C. Youngblood Scholarship ($1,500)

  • Potential candidates must demonstrate financial need, athletic participation, leadership, service, and character. 
  • GHS can nominate one individual.  Interested applicants should see application Application deadline is January.

 

USDA/1890 National Scholars Program

 

New River Community College Educational Foundation Scholarship ($1,000)

  • Scholarship available in the guidance office for students who are planning to enroll at NRCC
  • Award based on financial need and scholastic achievement
  • Application, two letters of recommendation, transcript and essay required.
  • GHS will send your transcript directly to the NRCC Financial Aid Office at your request.
  • Application has to be in the financial aid office by February.

 

EF Global Citizens Award

  • Requires essay—Describe how someone in your life has inspired you to live as a global citizen
  • Recipient of award will receive $1000 toward college tuition and an expense paid tour of Europe (10 students from the U.S. will be chosen)
  • Only one student from GHS is eligible to apply.

Virginia Tech-Eleanor Davenport Leadership Scholarship for Engineering

  • GHS may nominate 2 students who have exemplary GPA’s, SAT scores of 1500 or above, and strong leadership skills.

PTA Scholarships ($1000-$1200)

  • Potential candidates must be planning to teach or enter a youth-serving profession
  • Must attend college in VA
  • Based on academic ability and financial need

Radford University NRV Alumni Scholarship ($1000)

  • Potential candidates must have leadership experience; academic and financial need are also factors in selection of recipient
  • Student must enroll as a full-time freshman at RU
  • Application, essay, and letter of recommendation required
  • Deadline is February.

 

Virginia Space Grant Consortium Student Scholarships

  • Eligibility are those students who plan to become certified teachers majoring in tech ed, mathematics, or earth/space/life/environmental science. 
  • Requires application, personal statement, letters of recommendation, resume, and transcript.

Society of Cincinnati History Essay Contest (4-$3,000)

  • This contest is specifically for Virginia high school seniors who will attend a 4 year college or university in VA
  • Essay is related to the development of our nation, not to exceed 1500 words.

Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship Program (100-$1500)

  • Eligible students are those who have family actively engaged in agriculture, have a strong academic record (minimum ACT 18, SAT 850)

Best Buy Scholarship ($1,000-$2,000)

  • Three graduating high school seniors in each U.S. Congressional District will receive a scholarship.
  • Demonstrate commitment to and involvement in volunteer community service.

UAW & CAP Essay Contest (up to $1200, statewide competition)

  • Requires essay pertaining to labor and industry
  • Deadline:  February

 

Eggleston Ruritan Club ($600)

  • Student must live within the boundaries of the Eggleston Ruritan Club’s service area
  • Student must submit essay and 2 references
  • Deadline:  February.

 

Radford University NRV Alumni Scholarship ($1000)

Wal-Mart Scholarships

  • Several different scholarships are available, visit www.walmartfoundation.org and click on education to learn about the availability and requirements for scholarships. ‘
  • Applications are available in the personnel office at Wal-Mart beginning February 1st

GOT MILK?? Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache Awards ($7500)

  • Application must be completed on line at www.whymilk.com .
  • Award based on athletics,  academics, leadership, community service

Lucent Technologies Foundation ($5000)

  • An international competition to reward academic excellence and scientific achievement of 60 students
  • Potential candidate should be interested in pursuing career in information technology

Virginia Golf Foundation Scholarship

  • Applicant must have an interest in golf, be involved in community service & clubs, show financial need, have strong academic record.

NFIB Free Enterprise Scholars Award (100-$1000)

  • Requires application, essay on the importance of free enterprise and how you have demonstrated entrepreneurial achievement, transcript, ACT/SAT’s.

Va. Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts Educational Foundation, Inc. Scholarship ($1000)

  • Applicants must rank in top 20% of class or have a GPA of 3.0 or better and have an interest in conservation

Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship ($200)

  • Potential candidate aspires to become a teacher

VHSL Achievement Award (10-$1000)

  • GHS can nominate three students (one outstanding female & male athlete and one outstanding participant in academic activities)
  • Selection based on GPA, 3.0 or better is required, and involvement in extracurricular activities

USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships ($750-$1500)

  • Based on financial need ($35,000 or less)
  • 50% of awards will be given to students who are members of an ethnic minority or have a documented physical disability
  • Awards based on academic performance & future performance, leadership, participation in school & community activities, work experience, career and educational plans

Chevrolet/Michelle Kwan REWARDS Scholarship

  • Potential candidates are female students with 3.2 GPA or better, possess athletic ability, leadership, community involvement, demonstrate financial need, and plan on continuing with athletics in college

Virginia Public Safety Merit Scholarship

  • Scholarship is available to dependent children of active public safety officers
  • Selection based on scholastic achievement, character, personal and career goals, extracurricular activities, and school and community service

Laban Johnson Arts Scholarship ($150-$500)

  • This scholarship is for students who want to begin, explore, or extend their experiences in the visual, performing or literary arts.  Grants awarded on the basis of need, interest, and dedication.  (# restricted from GHS is 3 students.)

VA Christmas Tree Growers Association Scholarship ($500)

  • Candidates must complete a forestry or horticultural course at the college/trade school level.  Application materials may be obtained from Mrs. Boggess.  Deadline:  March

 

TET ‘68

  • Applicant must have parent or stepparent who is a Vietnam veteran.  Requires short essay on “What is Freedom.”

Nat’l Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Scholars Award (100-$1000 awards)

  • Applicant should demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit & initiative, must be nominated by a member of NFIB, and have a strong academic record
  • Requires application, essay, activity sheet, and transcript.  All materials must be received together by March 15, 2005.

Terry Zahn Memorial Scholarship

  • This scholarship was designed for seniors who have a cancer diagnosis

No-Addiction Campaign

  • Essay contest pertaining to drugs and alcohol
  • Winner eligible for $500 scholarship

The Lemonade Series Writing Scholarship ($500)

  • Requires a story, essay, or personal narrative describing how someone positively inspired you to change your life, maximum of 500 words

Virginia Coalition of Police and Deputy Sheriffs’ Scholarship Program (3-$1000)

  • Open to all Virginia high school seniors, go to www.virginiacops.org for info.
  • Requires essay on Va. Law Enforcement:  A Commitment to Community and letter of admission from college if a finalist.  Deadline:  April

 

T. Scott Eaton Scholarship (1-$500)

  • Potential applicants live in the New River Valley and will pursue studies in theater or the fine arts
  • Requires application, two letters of reference (one letter from a teacher/counselor, second letter from a work of volunteer supervisor), transcript, evidence of financial need, and essay.

Phillip Meadows Leaders Scholarship (1-$500)

  • This scholarship is for those students living in the New River Valley who will be attending Va. Tech
  • Requires application, two letters of reference (one letter from a teacher/counselor, second letter from a work of volunteer supervisor), transcript, evidence of financial need, and essay.
  • Deadline:  April

 

Va. Blue Ridge Chapter of the BYU Management Society ($1000)

  • Award based on ethical leadership, academic excellence, dedication to school & community, moral behavior.  Open to students in Southwest Virginia ONLY (so apply).
  • Applicants must have at least a 3.5 GPA
  • Requires application, transcripts, test records, and ecclesiastical endorsement by Pastor, Minister, or Bishop.

Virginia Athletic Trainers Association ($500 to $1000)

  • GHS may nominate one student. Candidate must be a high school senior who has been accepted into a college/university
  • Potential candidates plan to pursue a career in athletic training, demonstrate scholarship ability, leadership ability, responsible citizenship, & dedication/interest in Athletic Training

The Cameron Foundation ($500)

  • Criteria based on academic achievement (transcript required), SAT or ACT scores, school and community activities, and essay.

Roanoke Festival in the Park ($250 to $1000)

  • Students majoring in visual or performing arts are eligible to apply
  • Requires application, personal statement, 2 letters of recommendation (one must be from a teacher or instructor in the arts field), and a sample of applicant’s work.

Virginia Association for Pupil Transportation ($1000)

  • GHS may nominate one student.
  • To be eligible, student must have a parent or grandparent employed in the public school transportation field in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Potential candidates must have at least a 3.0 GPA, demonstrate leadership, citizenship, volunteer work, and a 500 word essay

District M Retired Teachers Scholarship

  • Applicant must be planning on entering the field of education
  • Requires application, transcript, test scores, photo, 3 letters of recommendation from guidance counselor, teacher, and community member, and a letter as to why you wish to receive this scholarship.

DAR Nursing Scholarship ($300)

  • Candidates attend GHS or NHS and will pursue a career in nursing through the Giles Tech Center, NRCC, or college.

Virginia Sheriff’s Institute Scholarship

  • Applicants must be planning on pursuing a major in criminal justice and only those students who are accepted to Va. college/universities will be considered
  • Requires application, essay, transcript, acceptance letter from college, letter of recommendation from the sheriff of the jurisdiction in which you live

Charles Perkins & Fritz Kehn Scholarship ($1000)

  • Applicants must be members of Freedom First Credit Unions (in B’burg, C’burg, etc.)

Educational Communications Scholarship Foundation

  • $1000 Grant based on academic success (GPA, SAT scores, class rank)

  • 250 awards ranging from $4,000 to $20,000
  • Selection based on “well-rounded” individuals who have developed interest in their communities

Target All-Around Scholarship

 

Noel C. Taylor Scholar-Athlete Award ($2000)

  • Candidate must be a GHS Varsity football player for 2 years and have received one varsity letter, demonstrate financial need, and possess respect of coaches, peers, teachers, and community members.
  • Requires application, 2 letters of recommendation, short essay, transcript, and statement of financial need.
  • Deadline: Materials must be received by November in WDBJ’s scholarship office.

 

Roy Stanley Miller Charitable Foundation Scholarships (2 - $1000)

  • Candidate must demonstrate financial need, major in journalism or be a deserving athlete
  • Requires application, federal tax return, short essay, letters of recommendation, and transcript.
  • Deadline: must be received by November in WDBJ’s scholarship office.

 

Navy Scholarships (full tuition)

  • Interested students must be willing to serve in the Navy upon graduation from college for 4 years
  • Potential candidates have minimum 530 verbal & 520 math SAT scores or 22English/22math for the ACT

Burger King Scholars ($1000)
