Welcome to another exciting year at Giles High School!

We’ve been busy this summer preparing for the new school year.  Six new faces will be part of the GHS family this year as Kristen Smith is our new guidance counselor for testing, Randall Weddle joins us in History, Brandon Webb in Math, Alicia Johnson and Kristen Radford in English, and Erin Mawby in Special Education.

Preliminary numbers indicate Giles High School will be fully accredited for the 6th consecutive year through the Standards of Learning assessments for the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Overall scores on these assessments should be Math in the low 70’s, English and Science in the high 80’s, and History in the low 90’s.  Plans are already in place to bring our math scores in-line with our other programs as math assessment is being addressed state-wide.  311 scores of ADVANCED were secured, with forty PERFECT scores of 600 through our S.O.L. testing this past year.

Our band program will stand at over 70 members as we enter a new school year and our drama program stands ready to add two more performances to our growing list of accomplishments.  Over one quarter-of-a-million dollars was secured by GHS graduates last year and more is expected of this year’s class.

Our fall athletic programs started the first of August as Golf, Football, Cross County, Cheerleading, and Volleyball have been working hard preparing for the season.  All G.H.S. teachers participated in a two-day workshop dealing with internet safety and mandatory in-services.

Eighth grade orientation is scheduled for August 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  This will be an opportunity for our new students to navigate the building as they follow their schedule through an abbreviated school day.

Parents can keep track of their child’s assignments through Schoolnotes.com.  You can input our zip code of 24134, and then choose your child’s teachers for this valuable information.

Please feel free to call or stop by anytime you have a question; my office doors is always open.  I look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

Gregory A. Brown
