A. Overview and Rationale:

A highlight of the seventh-grade year is a four-day historical trip to Washington, D.C., Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Richmond. This is a huge financial obligation for students and parents, but one that is well worth the cost. In an effort to better inform parents, this project will create a home page, to be incorporated with the Giles County Public School page, on the objectives, purposes, finances, and general overview of the trip.

D. Activities

  1. Discuss need for a home page for the 7th-grade trip
  2. Locate and study layout of various home pages in the internet. Invite speakers to discuss creating a home page
  3. Brainstorm ideas for our own home page. Guide students to include:
    • financial obligation of students and parents
    • itinerary
    • historical and governmental background of cities to be visited
    • total cost of trip
    • fundraising and method of paying for trip
  4. Assign cooperative learning groups for each topic, including:
    • financing the trip and obligation for payment (fund-raisers, etc.)
    • developing an itinerary
    • creating informative historical descriptions of cities to be visited
    • listing rules and regulations
    • anticipating frequently-asked questions:
      • interview and survey students from previous trips
      • survey students who will be taking trip
  5. Prepare a layout of the home page (on paper)
  6. Critique and evaluate the prepared layout
  7. Edit and rewrite the layout
  8. Place the home page on the internet
  9. Evaluate all aspects of the project through classroom discussion and smallgroup evaluation using a checklist
  10. Survey parents and students on
    • their use of the home page
    • the accuracy of its information
    • their suggestiom for improving it
